What happens after you gain admission to an MBA programme?
Admission allows you to either accept or reject the offer. If you have applied to more than one programme, you may have multiple offers of admission from which to select one. If that is the case, utilising a decision matrix and discussing the choice with one or two trusted friends will likely assist you. It is best to reply to the institution within the time allotted to you so that other candidates who may be on a wait-list can be notified, as soon as possible.
It is important to remember that cognitive dissonance can set in once you have accepted a place on an MBA programme. Cognitive dissonance theory holds that almost every major purchase we make is likely to lead to some post purchase discomfort. In most cases, the time is short-lived, as classes begin and you are soon enveloped in the process.
I encourage you to prepare a quiet study space in your home where you feel comfortable, have a computer with phone and fax access and can store the course materials you will receive. Full-time MBA students may have the luxury of having study space on campus but may also need to plan study space at home. Whatever the situation, a space that feels comfortable and is conducive to study is important.
Some of you will put the study space to use before the MBA begins. You may enrol in computer, maths or speed reading classes in order to feel better prepared. The sheer volume of work involved in an MBA means that the better prepared you are, the easier it will be for you.
Finally, spend a relaxing time or holiday with family or friends before beginning your studies. While enrolled in the MBA programme, you will be likely to find that holidays are less restful and easily overtaken by concerns about your studies. My advice is to relax, enjoy your friends and family and look forward to an exhilarating and challenging experience.
Best wishes for a learning experience that you’ll never forget!
