Management experience Although not a requirement for admission to most programmes, management experience can be advantageous when applying for admission. Auckland, Canterbury, Massey, Henley, Otago and Southern Cross consider the management experience of their applicants.

Interview Canterbury, Massey, Otago and Victoria require a personal interview with each applicant.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and IELTS (International English Language Testing System) are used to test competence in English for anyone who does not use English as his or her primary language. Non-domestic (foreign, international) applicants may be required to provide a TOEFL or IELTS report. For specific TOEFL or IELTS requirements, please see the program of your choice.

Admission tests
Otago requires applicants to complete the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT®) and have their scores submitted. Preferred scores on the GMAT® are generally 550 and above. Victoria requires successful completion of their Victoria MBA Admissions Test.

What is the GMAT®?

According to the designers of the GMAT: "The Graduate Management Admission Test® (GMAT®) is a standardised assessment—delivered in English—that helps business schools assess the qualifications of applicants for advanced study in business and management. Schools use the test as one predictor of academic performance in an MBA or in other graduate management programmes.

The GMAT® measures basic verbal, mathematical, and analytical writing skills that you have developed over a long period of time in your education and work. It does NOT measure:
  • your knowledge of business,
  • your job skills,
  • specific content in your undergraduate or first university course work,
  • your abilities in any other specific subject area,
  • subjective qualities—such as motivation, creativity, and interpersonal skills."

For more information on the GMAT, please check out their website: http://www.mba.com/

Candidates are encouraged to practice taking the GMAT® by completing sample tests.
These are available through a variety of sources such as "GMAT® for Dummies" which are
available through local bookstores. In my experience, practice has been linked with
improved official scores.
